“A bun worth the drive…”

By K. Ross

Let me ask you a question…have you ever driven somewhere just because the internet told you to? I know, I know…we all say we won’t fall for the hype. Then the next thing you know you’re in the car saying, “Well, it’s only an hour away!” That’s exactly what seems to be happening in Waynesboro these days!

If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably seen the videos. One minute hardly anyone outside of Waynesboro knew about this little bakery, and the next minute people were lining up before the doors even opened. That’s the power of going viral! Bonobos Bakery has become one of Virginia’s newest “must stop” destinations, and honestly…I completely understand why. A single TikTok video sent people from all over the state searching for their GPS, and now they sell out almost every day.

Now, I’ve always believed that some of the best places are tucked away in small towns. Those are the places where people pour their heart into what they do, and Bonobos Bakery is no exception. Started by a husband-and-wife team Lauren and Jarrad, this bakery began as a dream that grew from farmers markets into a storefront that’s now drawing visitors from all over Virginia. I just love stories like that!

Of course, you can’t talk about Bonobos without talking about their baked goods! Their giant cinnamon rolls seem to be the star of the show, but don’t stop there. From buttery pastries to cookies, breads, and other sweet treats, everything looks like it belongs in a magazine…only better because you actually get to eat it! And if you’re anything like me, you’ll probably walk in saying you’re only buying one thing. HA! Good luck with that.

What I also love is that they haven’t let all the attention change who they are. Even with the long lines and social media fame, they’re still focused on being part of their community and supporting local businesses. That says a lot about the people behind the counter. Sometimes going viral can change a business overnight, but it doesn’t have to change their heart.

So, if you’re planning a little Virginia road trip, add Waynesboro to your list. Get there early because selling out isn’t just a saying around here…it’s what happens! And trust me, there’s nothing worse than pulling into a bakery parking lot only to find the “Sold Out” sign. (Talk about heartbreak!)

Happy road tripping…and don’t forget to grab an extra cinnamon roll. You’ll thank me later!
