“Who’s ready for a County Fair…”

Who remembers my blog about the Highland County Maple Festival? If you’ve been following along, then you know how much I love making the drive over the mountain to one of my favorite places in Virginia. Well, guess what? Highland County has another event that deserves a spot on your calendar!
As summer starts winding down, it’s time for one of my favorite traditions…the Highland County Fair. There’s just something about a good county fair that makes you slow down, enjoy the moment, and start looking forward to everything fall has to offer.
The drive to Highland County is just as beautiful this time of year. The rolling mountains are still covered in summer green, but if you look closely, you can almost feel that first hint of fall in the air. It’s one of those places that reminds you how lucky we are to have so many beautiful destinations just a couple of hours from Richmond.
Once you arrive at the fairgrounds, you’ll find everything you’d expect from a true hometown fair. From livestock shows and agricultural exhibits to local crafts, delicious fair food, and plenty of family fun, there’s something around every corner. I always enjoy walking through the exhibits and seeing the hard work that local families and businesses put into making this event such a success.
Of course, no fair is complete without grabbing something good to eat! Whether you’re craving a classic funnel cake, barbecue, fresh-cut fries, or homemade desserts, come hungry because you won’t leave disappointed.
One of the things I love most about the Highland County Fair is that it doesn’t feel rushed or crowded. It has that small-town charm where everyone greets you with a smile, and before you know it, you feel like you’ve been part of the community for years. It’s the perfect place to spend the day with family or friends while making a few memories along the way.
For me, this fair always signals that summer is coming to an end. The kids will be heading back to school soon, football season is kicking off, pumpkin spice will be everywhere, and those cooler temperatures we’ve all been waiting for are finally just around the corner. As much as I love summer, there’s something special about this time of year, and the Highland County Fair is the perfect way to welcome the changing seasons.
So, if you’re looking for one last summer road trip before we trade flip-flops for sweatshirts, I highly recommend heading west to Highland County. Take your time, enjoy the fair, explore the beautiful countryside, and don’t forget to stop by a few local businesses while you’re there.
Who knows…this might just become your new end-of-summer tradition, too.
