The City of Franklin is located in Tidewater Virginia, 40 miles west of Norfolk and nine miles north of the North Carolina border.Ê Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks resort areas are both within a one hour drive of Franklin, as is the city of Richmond. ÊIt is serviced by the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.
Franklin offers access to a variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, boating, and hunting. In addition, its Historic Downtown area, complete with a functioning Main Street, gives Franklin a charming small town atmosphere. Downtown Franklin was devastated by Hurricane Floyd, and has been rebuilding at a remarkable rate. The Downtown District currently provides visitors and residents with over 130 businesses and dining experiences. Unique gifts, art, wonderful fragrances, and fine and casual dining are all part of Franklin’s charm.
Virginia’s unique history and architecture are represented in the historical estates located in Franklin. The Sunnyside Plantation, built in 1790-1810, retains many of its original features, including its woodwork, fireplaces, and heart pine floors. The grounds still include many of the plantation’s original working buildings, including the smokehouse, schoolhouse, diary house, and milkhouse. Sunnyside Plantations continues to operate as a Bed and Breakfast, and is open the public.
