Henrico County

A Place in American History: Henrico County Virginia

Henrico County was the second settlement in the colony of Virginia and dates to 1634. The county was named for Henry, the eldest son of James I, the King of England. Henrico County’s militia also played a pivotal role in defending Richmond during the revolutionary war. Despite their efforts, the British did occupy Richmond for three months, and burned many of the County’s court records from this time period. During the Civil War, Henrico County was once again, center stage, because of its proximity to the Confederate Capital, Richmond. The battle of Seven Pines, fought near Williamsburg Road, was the bloodiest battle of the first 14 months of the Civil War, and it is where General Robert E. Lee first took command of Confederate troops.
